Oulah, I have not seen "History Of Violence" but it seems to me that its out, everyone said great things about this Cronenberg.
And a quick glance at the press criticism of joe (full 4 stars out of 4) has confirmed this.

Indeed it is well noted, both in the press and spectators ...
What I did not like? :
- You can feel the outset that the main character is not very "clean", so no surprise ...
- A small amateur side in realizing I did not like (but that might be wanted ...)
Finally I let you see and you tell me more.
Cronenberg's eXistenZ I loved, more elaborate, complex, but as you say "my tastes and colors ..." from this film are that I did not like much, but he lets look anyway ...
